- Open-face boxing headgear: offers less face protection, but provides better visibility. This type of open-face boxing headgear is for people who already have plenty of experience and prefer a wider field of vision in exchange for less protection around the face.
- Headgear with cheek guards: offers more protection than the previous type since it includes protection around the cheeks and chin, but visibility is slightly more limited than with an open-face headgear. It is the most common headgear for the majority of people who train combat sports.

- Headgear with face shield: features a shield that completely protects the face. They are designed for practicing martial arts that involve weapons and require full face protection from accidental strikes. They are not designed for combat sports sparring. In many cases the shield is removable to allow the headgear to be used without it.
